People are looking for a way to <\/em><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"83725918a09a\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">connect emotionally<\/em><\/span><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">. As UX is evolving, new methods appear. However, that doesn\u2019t mean they are entirely new. In fact, it goes back to the core concept of User Experience.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"25b2\" class=\"graf graf--p graf--hasDropCapModel graf--hasDropCap graf-after--p\"><em><span class=\"graf-dropCap\">T<\/span><\/em><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"215e81d578ae 83725918a09a d9e23ac56df3\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">rust is one of the key factors when you wish to represent your product<\/em><\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"215e81d578ae d9e23ac56df3\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">, service or yourself as a brand. It plays a significant role that determines how others will react to you in the first place.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"775e\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Ever wondered how you or your brand can appear more user-friendly? More alive and human even if you communicate your messages, for example, via a webpage?<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"9149\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">My goal with this article is to give a peek into the world of <span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"83725918a09a\"><a href=\"https:\/\/capturly.com\/blog\/what-is-emotional-website-design-and-how-to-use-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emotional design<\/a> from a UX perspective.<\/span>\u00a0There are some tips you can use when it comes to designing:<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ffc9\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\">So what is emotional design\u00a0anyway?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"1b08\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">Reading this expression, you might think of trending emojis, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/freshsparks.com\/user-experience-tips-best-error-messages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/freshsparks.com\/user-experience-tips-best-error-messages\/\">funny error messages<\/a>, the little T-rex from Google and so on.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"d571\" class=\"graf graf--figure graf-after--p\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder-fill\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"progressiveMedia-image js-progressiveMedia-image aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*1E-th8jFGXyJ0LgyNuzvhA.gif\" alt=\"google t-rex gif\" width=\"309\" height=\"239\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*1E-th8jFGXyJ0LgyNuzvhA.gif\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"5d8c\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">Although you\u2019re partially right, these things are relatively recent innovations. However, it has been around for quite awhile now. Recently,<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shopify.com\/partners\/blog\/17-web-design-trends-you-need-to-know-in-2017#emotionally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.shopify.com\/partners\/blog\/17-web-design-trends-you-need-to-know-in-2017#emotionally\">\u00a0new technologies have been evolving.<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"6763\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Don_Norman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Don_Norman\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Donald D. Norman<\/strong><\/a> is the man behind the scenes. We can say that he\u2019s the one who popularized the term in<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Emotional-Design-Love-Everyday-Things\/dp\/0465051367\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1494855201&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=emotional+design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Emotional-Design-Love-Everyday-Things\/dp\/0465051367\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1494855201&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=emotional+design\">\u00a0his book <em>Emotional Design<\/em><\/a> which apparently was his way of addressing the criticism of <em>The Design of Everyday Things<\/em> that was published in the late 80s. There he talked about <span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"83725918a09a\">\u201cusable but ugly\u201d products<\/span>. In <em>Emotional Design<\/em>\u00a0Norman writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"73cd\" class=\"graf graf--pullquote graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p\"><p><span class=\"markup--quote markup--pullquote-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"215e81d578ae\">\u201cUsable but ugly. That\u2019s a pretty harsh judgment. Alas, the critique is valid. <\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--pullquote-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"215e81d578ae 4d33c4f5c17a\">Usable designs are not necessarily enjoyable to use.<\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--pullquote-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"215e81d578ae\"> And, as my three-teapot story indicates, an attractive design is not necessarily the most efficient. But must these attributes be in conflict? <\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--pullquote-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"215e81d578ae d51cf17da8ca\">Can beauty and brains, pleasure and usability, go hand in hand?\u201d\u200a\u2014\u200aDonald D.\u00a0Norman<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"44ef\" class=\"graf graf--figure graf-after--pullquote\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder-fill\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"progressiveMedia-image js-progressiveMedia-image aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*3qOds0c0ua2GHE7izCmuEg.jpeg\" alt=\"attractive products on a website\" width=\"469\" height=\"352\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*3qOds0c0ua2GHE7izCmuEg.jpeg\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"ba26\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\"><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"3dbebb72044\">It turns out that <\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"3dbebb72044 d51cf17da8ca\">attractive products are more attractive since they light up our fantasies<\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"3dbebb72044\">. They are simply more interesting and <\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"3dbebb72044 9a527cc91bb d51cf17da8ca\">interest is one step towards trust and tolerance<\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"3dbebb72044 d51cf17da8ca\">.<\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"3dbebb72044\"> Yes, <\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"3dbebb72044 95e849611446\">we tend to be more tolerant towards something that is designed to be catchy and functional at the same time<\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"3dbebb72044\">. <\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"3dbebb72044 d51cf17da8ca 9a527cc91bb\">So when talking about emotional design, what you do is actually designing the context itself that triggers certain emotions.<\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"3dbebb72044 9a527cc91bb\"> In other words, you are designing for emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"57ae\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--p\">The <span class=\"markup--quote markup--h4-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"be533ca5ebd1\">Maslow&#8217;s Hierarchy<\/span> of\u00a0Design<\/h3>\n<blockquote id=\"dfc2\" class=\"graf graf--pullquote graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--h4\"><p><span class=\"markup--quote markup--pullquote-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"21df53548797\">\u201cA chef in a restaurant wants his food to be more than edible, he wants it to be delicious. As designers, we should want our websites to be more than usable.\u201d\u200a\u2014\u200aStephen\u00a0Anderson<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"a10a\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--pullquote\"><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"4d33c4f5c17a\">It is basically the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/uxstudioteam.com\/ux-blog\/emotional-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/uxstudioteam.com\/ux-blog\/emotional-design\/\">pyramid of needs translated into product design<\/a><\/span> and it works like a charm!<\/p>\n<p id=\"6fed\" class=\"graf graf--p graf--hasDropCapModel graf--hasDropCap graf-after--p\"><em><strong><span class=\"graf-dropCap\">F<\/span>unctionality\u200a<\/strong><\/em><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\u2014\u200athe foundation of your project which starts with a great idea that has one single goal at this point: to work and serve certain needs.<\/em> The old-school ToshibaT1100 could serve as a good example:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"77a4\" class=\"graf graf--figure graf-after--p graf--trailing\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder-fill\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"progressiveMedia-image js-progressiveMedia-image aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*M_mpIdTRS0nxhnD1Vl4W7Q.jpeg\" alt=\"functionality in emotional design\" width=\"411\" height=\"410\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*M_mpIdTRS0nxhnD1Vl4W7Q.jpeg\" \/><em>Not so pretty but hey, it works!<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"section section--body\">\n<div class=\"section-divider\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-content\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--insetColumn\">\n<figure id=\"ab83\" class=\"graf graf--figure graf--leading\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder-fill\"><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"graf-image aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*PBmFE9UWO23-SVfRlEvPbw.png\" alt=\"functionality in emotional design pyramid\" width=\"506\" height=\"81\" data-image-id=\"1*PBmFE9UWO23-SVfRlEvPbw.png\" data-width=\"625\" data-height=\"100\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"5dd9\" class=\"graf graf--p graf--hasDropCapModel graf--hasDropCap graf-after--figure\"><strong><em><span class=\"graf-dropCap\">R<\/span><\/em><\/strong><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\"><strong>eliability\u200a<\/strong>\u2014\u200anow you are at the point where <\/em><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"d51cf17da8ca\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">people want something they can trust; a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capturly.com\"> product which not only functions under one condition but also offers multiple ways to rely on it<\/a><\/em><\/span><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">.<\/em> After dealing with skepticism and proving his words by selling almost 10.000 of the model T1100 in\u00a0the first year, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/people\/atsutoshi-nishida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/people\/atsutoshi-nishida\/\">Mr. Atsutoshi Nishida<\/a> told the audience in a marketing seminar that he has a vision. A vision of laptops having colored screens and the size of A4 papers. In this context, it means that people want more and what you did so far is impressive but not enough. This is a good thing, it means you are on track and have the opportunity to make your project future-proof. Now you can think of form-factories, UI and so on.<\/em> Going back to our example, the keyboard was the Achilles of the libretto. The users started to complain about how hard to type on it correctly. This is where it starts to get really interesting. Your product is not only functional but also usable and realiable. <span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"4d33c4f5c17a d51cf17da8ca\">Proficiency is the way of converting a well-used product into more convenient<\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"d51cf17da8ca\">, by asking yourself the following question:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"759d\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p\"><p>\u201cHow else would the users approach my product?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"dbcd\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--blockquote\">The evolution of mobile phones can be a great example to demonstrate this step. As laptops, mobile phones have their story starting with core functionality offered by the first portable Motorola phones.. Later, these phones not only got upgraded cellular networks but also shrank to pocket-size, becoming reliable in many situations<span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"d51cf17da8ca\">.<\/span> Then a design company and an engineering company came together to focus on usability and Sony Ericcson was born, bringing colors into the game.
