Without them, there\u2019s not much use starting anything.<\/p>\n<p id=\"15fd\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"46159d0cbf7a 6fa6ba141464\">A persona is a&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">fictional customer type<\/span> who will use your product, they represent the potential consumers with their own stories and backgrounds.&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"6fa6ba141464\">The more trustworthy your persona is, the better your chances are.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"77cc\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019m sure most of you are familiar with the popular simulation game:<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">&nbsp;The Sims<\/span>. Being&nbsp;<em><span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">objective<\/span><\/em>&nbsp;is the key, and one person can barely do that.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p id=\"4d6f\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"918d5a040e7d\"><strong><span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Note<\/span>:<\/strong> the most rational profiles come from&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">field studies<\/span>, these make the most realistic personas.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"d5d6\" class=\"graf--h4 graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_many_personas_will_you_need\"><\/span>How many personas will you need?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"72a9\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Usually designing&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">2 or 3 personas<\/span>&nbsp;is enough. You mustn\u2019t have too many, because&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"766f84f7ccc8\">if you have<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">&nbsp;unused ones<\/span>, it\u2019s worse than not creating them at all.<\/span>Why would you spend money and time on something that you are not going to use?<\/p>\n<p id=\"9c7d\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/onezero.medium.com\/in-1983-i-created-secret-weapons-for-interactive-design-d154eb8cfd58\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alan Cooper <\/a>&#8211; who is often called the father of Visual Basic &#8211; emphasized that we have to pay attention to our <span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">primary persona<\/span>, so that we can satisfy him for the most part, and make our&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">secondary personas<\/span>&nbsp;happy.&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"8ff719c082ad\">On the one hand, we mustn\u2019t think that we have to please everyone, because in the end, we might end up pleasing no one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"c9cd\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the other hand, you shouldn\u2019t stereotype your users,&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">oversimplification&nbsp;<\/span>can also ruin the whole work.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12162 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/capturly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Creating-personas.png\" alt=\"Creating personas\" width=\"1200\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capturly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Creating-personas.png 1200w, https:\/\/capturly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Creating-personas-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/capturly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Creating-personas-1024x512.png 1024w, https:\/\/capturly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Creating-personas-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure><p><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4885\" class=\"graf--h3 graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Different_types_of_personas\"><\/span>Different types of personas<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"6c17\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Alan Cooper, 3 types of personas can be differentiated:<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"0b96\" class=\"graf--h4 graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Marketing personas<\/h3>\n<p id=\"1ad3\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s kind of a&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">materialistic approach<\/span>, the creators concentrate on answering the<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">&nbsp;WHAT&nbsp;<\/span>questions, but not the WHY ones.&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">They gain demographic data, shopping preferences, motivations, concerns, and media habits.<\/span> A typical example would be 20\u201330-year-old USA citizens with their relevant behaviors listed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7585\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s very useful for determining the<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">&nbsp;customer types<\/span>, but not much besides that.<br>It won\u2019t tell us anything about how they use the given product, which features they would appreciate, and what they really want to gain with our product.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2760\" class=\"graf--h4 graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Proto-personas<\/h3>\n<p id=\"618d\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you are in a&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">hurry<\/span>&nbsp;and have absolutely&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">no money<\/span>&nbsp;to spend on creating your own personas, you can have proto-personas, which are provided by&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">secondary research<\/span>. These work like prototypes, as the name says it too. However this type is the worst of the three, Alan Cooper\u2019s opinion is that using proto-personas is still a better option than not creating personas at all.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"e3be\" class=\"graf--h4 graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Design personas<\/h3>\n<p id=\"b039\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">This type focuses on answering the&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">WHY<\/span>&nbsp;questions, but not the WHAT ones.&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">These include their goals, behavior, and pain points. <\/span>They are usually created by&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">field research<\/span>&nbsp;and with the help of&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">real people<\/span>. This type usually has an individual story for each given persona. With the before-mentioned data, we can shape the personas much more precisely, as <span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">we are able to gain insight, implement the users\u2019 goals, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"14ab\" class=\"graf--h4 graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_importance_of_empathy\"><\/span>The importance of empathy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"c81e\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Can you recall 2 of your favorite&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">advertisements<\/span>? Do you know why could you recall them? The most likely explanation is empathy. The&nbsp;<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medical\/empathy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medical\/empathy\"><span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">medical definition<\/span><\/a> of empathy is:<\/p>\n<p id=\"893a\" class=\"graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"918d5a040e7d\"><span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">\u201c<\/span><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">The action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"a06c\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the help of empathy, you can create design personas.<br>How? In order for this map to be useful, you have to&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">empathize<\/span>&nbsp;with the persona and \u201cbe\u201d him for a day,&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">walk some miles in his shoes<\/span> to really understand his situation.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9451\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Name<br><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Naming your personas can help you to&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">remember them<\/span>&nbsp;easily and separate the different profiles from each other.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2657\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Photo<br><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Attaching a photo (even if it\u2019s just a sketch or drawing) can help you to&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">associate<\/span>&nbsp;the persona with a face.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7631\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Occupation<br><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Giving the persona an occupation can undoubtedly improve the outcome. As a person\u2019s job takes up a&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">big portion of her life<\/span>, the same applies to our fictional persona: it can have a huge impact.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2387\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Thoughts and feelings<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The personas own&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">speculations<\/span>, those things that really matter to him, either in a&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">positive or a negative&nbsp;<\/span>way, both of them are important. Note down every relevant piece of information.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"84a8\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Sight<br><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those things that the persona sees. This can be&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">anything that is considered important from his point of view<\/span>, even a personas home, neighborhood, work environment, family and friends, something beautiful or even irritating.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5c6a\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Hearing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">What do the people around him say, what music does he listen to, which noises irritate him? The persona\u2019s&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">friends, boss and people who influence them&nbsp;<\/span>can be a crucial part, depending on how pliable the persona is.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"36d5\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Speech and actions<br><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The persona\u2019s actions are also important to be listed as detailed as possible in order to speculate later what would our customers do in a given situation. This section can include our persona\u2019s&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">activity<\/span>,&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">behavior in public<\/span>&nbsp;and in&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">private environment<\/span>&nbsp;too.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"21b0\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Pains\/frustrations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this step you list the frustrations of the persona in order to be able to solve them later on. My friend asked me this and my answer was: <span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">YES<\/span>, you do. Let me show you how you should do it. Personas can almost always help you, not just in particular situations like developing a mobile application.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a42d\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Let\u2019s say that you are about to open a mid-sized coffee shop in the city center with a warm atmosphere, high-quality coffee, and relatively cheap prices.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>1. Hold a quality brainstorming session<\/h3>\n<p id=\"edea\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">First, you should sit down with your team and have&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">quality<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">brainstorming sessions<\/span>. Arrange more sessions, if possible.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1ffa\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">In this particular situation, I would recommend you imagine as many <span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">potential customer types<\/span>&nbsp;as possible (who would, of course, be willing to visit your cafe).<\/p>\n<p id=\"7d2d\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">The main idea of brainstorming is to let your&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">thoughts flow freely<\/span>. It doesn\u2019t matter if somebody doesn\u2019t have the best idea (or even if it\u2019s a stupid idea), but<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">&nbsp;if people are scared to state their opinion, the outcome will be distorted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"6d52\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Once nobody has any more ideas to share, you can start&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">arranging the existing ideas<\/span>. Remember that you mustn\u2019t have too many personas, but having one persona is merely enough. You have to&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">organize them into an order<\/span>&nbsp;based on the importance of the given customer types.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p id=\"48a2\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">For example, you want to have a cafe with a cozy atmosphere. This means that your <span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">primary customers<\/span> probably won\u2019t be wealthy businessmen. Even if they come, they won\u2019t be there for hours chatting about their job and cars, they\u2019ll have those coffees on the go.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">2. Define your primary customers<\/h3>\n<p id=\"cfa9\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\">Let\u2019s say that in the end, your team agreed on having <span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">3 personas<\/span>. Your 3 most important customer types will be:<\/p>\n<p id=\"f0e7\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">1. students<br>2. housewives<br>3. young adults<\/p>\n<p id=\"0205\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Many small business owners stop here.&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">DON\u2019T do that!<\/span>&nbsp;This is not too different from having&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">proto-personas<\/span>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">marketing personas<\/span>. What you need to do is to create design personas.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Set up your empathy maps<\/h3>\n<p id=\"9881\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">The next step is to have your&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">empathy maps<\/span>&nbsp;printed,&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">sticky notes<\/span>,&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">pens<\/span>, <span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">coffee and cookies<\/span>&nbsp;prepared: let the fun part begin.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3664\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Your first persona will be in the first customer type. We are filling the empathy map now.<\/p>\n<p id=\"18ea\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">She is&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Angie<\/span>, a high school&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">student<\/span>.<br><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">[Insert your image here]<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"bcd4\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">With this little step, we completed 3 of the 6 aforementioned steps. (Angie could be a university student too, it depends on your very own preferences.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"51e8\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">The next section includes more&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">creativity<\/span>.&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">You have to be Angie for a day and note down EVERY important piece of information.<\/span>&nbsp;After that, arrange them and put them on the empathy map.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3327\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">She will do tons of things, but you will have to sort them out.&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Remember that you don\u2019t want to have a list with every single action your persona does, only a short list of those actions that might affect your company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"2a0a\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">In the picture you can see my&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">rough draft<\/span>, of course, it may vary, but you can get the hang of it from this and create your very own empathy maps with more detailed and complex structure.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"2b00\" class=\"graf--figure graf-after--p\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12166 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/capturly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Empathy-map-example.png\" alt=\"Empathy map example\" width=\"1200\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capturly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Empathy-map-example.png 1200w, https:\/\/capturly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Empathy-map-example-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/capturly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Empathy-map-example-1024x512.png 1024w, https:\/\/capturly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Empathy-map-example-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder-fill\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"8262\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--figure\">See? It\u2019s not that hard.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Extend and optimize the profile of personas<\/h3>\n<p id=\"b0ed\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">The next step is to create your&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">housewife<\/span>&nbsp;(Susan) and your&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">young adult&nbsp;<\/span>(Peter). They\u2019ll be somewhat different from each other of course.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d1bc\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Once you have all of your empathy maps done, you can start focusing on&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">sorting the sticky notes<\/span>. You should have two groups: the ones that you can try to solve, and the ones that you cannot. Don\u2019t throw the second group away, they might be useful later.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e3f7\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">The&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">we-might-be-able-to-solve-these notes&nbsp;<\/span>should be put in an order too, according to how much effect it has or how easily you can solve them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8da9\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Then you can focus on solving them, from&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">easiest to hardest<\/span>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p id=\"e260\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">For example Angie likes to have a<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">&nbsp;free Wi-Fi hotspot&nbsp;<\/span>and listening to music with her friends. You can see that it\u2019s not to hard too satisfy, but it can have an incredible effect.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"6660\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Speaking of Wi-Fi, it won\u2019t bother anybody, so we have to make sure we add it to the list.<br>In connection with the music, it\u2019s harder, because some people might not like it.&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">You have to find the golden mean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"d63a\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">On the other hand, Angie is pissed off when a guy she hates appears. I think we can all agree that we cannot really solve this problem (unless your cafe is a consultancy too).<\/p>\n<p id=\"7292\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">After sorting the notes, go over every single one of them and see if anyone has a&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">solution<\/span>. If you have&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">multiple solutions<\/span>, I suggest writing all of them down, and choosing the most suitable one.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"25d4\" class=\"graf--h4 graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"ede0\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\">The&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">importance of the customers<\/span>&nbsp;is gradually increasing, many of the successful companies\u2019 vision and mission relies on that too. Of course there are other important factors, but you mustn\u2019t forget that in the end the customers are the ones who increase your income.<\/p>\n<p id=\"17f9\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">And remember\u2026 however, designing an accurate design persona&nbsp;<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">requires some skills<\/span>, in some cases<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">&nbsp;<\/span>it\u2019s not much harder than creating a sim on your computer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0f96\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Do you have any thoughts or feedback?
